How social media takeovers actually happen

What to do if your account was already taken over
Act in order. Do not start by arguing with the scammer in your own DMs.
- Secure your email first from a clean device. Change the password. Turn on authenticator-app MFA or a passkey. Check forwarding rules and recovery contacts.
- Use the platform's official hacked-account flow (Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, LinkedIn each have one). Prefer the in-app path over links anyone texts you.
- Restore recovery email and phone if the attacker changed them. Screenshot everything.
- Warn friends and followers that your account was compromised. Tell them not to send money or click links until you say it is safe.
- Revoke unfamiliar sessions and connected apps once you are back in. Change reused passwords everywhere.
- If money moved or IDs were used, call your bank, report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov, and consider IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan.
